Satyrus dryas (Scopoli, 1763)

· TYPE LOCALITY. "Krain" [Kraina, Yugoslavia].

· RANGE. From Spain and the Baltic Sea coasts across Europe, the mountains of S. Kazakhstan, central and S. Siberia to the Ussuri region, Korea and Japan.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The main part of the range (the European part, the Crimea, the Caucasus, Transcaucasia, the Urals) is occupied by the nominate subspecies. Siberian and Transbaikalian specimens known under the name septentrionalis Wnukowsky, 1929 (= sibiricus Staudinger, 1871, nom. praeoccup.) are almost not different from the nominate form. In the Ussuri region, Sakhalin and the Kuriles, the ssp. bipunctatus Motschulsky, 1861 (= kurilensis Matsumura, 1928) is known to occur; populations from Dzhungarsky and Zailiisky Alatau, Saur and Tarbagatai are probably to be referred to a separate subspecies.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Mostly forest edges and clearings up to 1,700 m a.s.l. Flight period: June-September. Host plants (Eckstein, 1913; Nekrutenko, 1990; etc.): grasses Arrhenatherum elatius, Achnatherum, Molinia coerulea, Calamagrostis, Avena, Bromus, Dactylis, Poa, Festuca, Carex, etc.
