Aporia crataegi crataegi (Linnaeus, 1758) • TYPE LOCALITY. Sweden. • RANGE. The entire Palaearctic Region, except for the extreme north and south. • DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. Although a great number of varieties have been described, the subspecies below remain largely doubtful due to the species being poorly variable: ssp. crataegi (Linnaeus, 1758) (= colona Krulikowsky, 1909; = karavaevi Kruli- kowsky, 1926) - the European part, W. Siberia, the Caucasus Major and Minor; ssp. meinhardi Krulikowsky, 1909 (= sibirica Verity, 1911; = sqjana Verity, 1911; = asiatica Meinhard, 1916) - Siberia, the Altai, the Sayan Mts., Transbaikalia, the Far East, Kamchatka; ssp. banghaasi Bryk, 1921 (= ussurica Kardakov, 1928; = sordida Kardakov, 1928) - the Amur and Ussuri regions; ssp. sachalinensis Matsumura, 1925 - Sakhalin; ssp. adherbal Fruhstorfer, 1910 (= nip ho nica Verity, 1911) - the Kuriles; ssp. irardca Forster, 1939 - the Armenian Highland, the Talysh Mts.; ssp. pellucida Rjiiber, 1907 (= sheljuzhkoi Bryk et Meinhard, 1912) - Kopet-Dagh; ssp. tianschanica Ruhl, 1893 (= naryna Sheljuzhko, 1910; = centralasiae Verity, 1911) - N. and Inner Tian-Shan, Dzhungarsky Alatau, Ghissar, S. Ghissar, Darvaz, Alai; ssp. shugnana Sheljuzhko, 1925 - the W. Pamirs. • HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. One of the commonest species in our fauna, occurring in almost all habitat types except for tundras, deserts and high altitudes. Flight period: May-October depending on the latitude, in one to three, sometimes even more, generations. Outbreaks are common, leading to significant damages of orchards. Larvae can feed on numerous species of Rosaceae and Vacciniaceae (Kurentzov, 1970; Gorbunov, Korshunov, 1995; etc.), preferring various shrubs (Crataegus, Prunus, Vaccinium, etc.). • TYPE LOCALITY, "...von der Dzeja bis zum Bureja-Gebirge" [Between Zeya River and the Bureinsky Mts., Amur region].
• RANGE. From Mongolia and Transbaikalia across E. China to the Ussuri region, Korea and Japan.
• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The nominate subspecies occurs in the Amur and Ussuri regions, while the ssp. occidentalis 0. Bang-Haas, 1927 in Transbaikalia.
• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Lowland deciduous forests, in the Ussuri region also in the mountains. Flight period: July-August. Host plant (Kurentzov, 1970; Fukuda et al., 1982): Berberis. Hibernation larval.
• SIMILAR SPECIES. A. crataegi: UNH without yellow basal spot.
